 History of Karachi, Sindh

Sindh has a distinct history in the subcontinent with regard to its geographical boundaries. About a thousand years ago, in 312 Hijri, 912 A.D, the Arab geographer Abul Qasim bin Khardaz published his book "Kitab al-Masalak wa Malik" and at the same time in 912 A.D.  In his book "Moj-ul-Dhahab" he writes that Sindh has been a separate country which includes Multan and Makran and Kashmir also comes under the Sindhi government. All of them are headquartered in Alwar and Debal in Sindh.

We will talk about the history of an area of Sindh called Karachi which has been a settlement of Sindhi fishermen for centuries. It was built in 1729 by Bhujomal, a famous Sindh businessman from Sehwan, Sindh. Was founded from Dar (Kharadar) and since then the city of Karachi begins. Bhojomal and his sons made Karachi the center of trade and he himself was always the ruler of Karachi in which Daryanumal was a famous and powerful ruler. In Sindh it was a great war period between the Mughals, Kalhora and Khan of Kalat.  When the family of Khan of Kalat was killed in different wars, in case of bloodshed, they got the central government of Karachi from 1697 to 1757 and from 1774 to 1794 for 80 years but even then the governor of Karachi was the local Sindhi Bhujomal family.  When the Kalhora rulers of Sindh ruled back from 1757 to 1774 and the Talpur rulers of Sindh ruled from 1794 to 1843 and later the British government came and even then the local government of Karachi belonged to the Bhujomal family who formed Karachi.

The British conquered Sindh in 1843 and then the British annexed Sindh to the Bombay Presidency in 1847. There were then four administrative divisions within the Bombay Presidency.

Karachi was then the headquarters of Sindh when the capital of the four divisions, including Sindh, was made Bombay, just as today Islamabad is the capital of the four provinces.

Ghulam Muhammad Bhargari and Har Chandra Vishndas from Sindh joined the Bombay Council in 1908 and there they both started fighting for the independence of Sindh and after 28 years of struggle, on April 1, 1936, Sindh was separated from Bombay Presidency.

Independent province was given the authority and its capital was made Karachi which was earlier the headquarters of Sindh division then in 1940 the foundation of Sindh Assembly building was laid in Karachi which was constructed till 1942 and in this historic Sindh Assembly building, on 14 August 1947, Mountbatten gave powers to Quaid-e-Azam and thus Pakistan became independent and Karachi remained the capital of Sindh,

but on 22 May 1948, the Central Assembly separated Karachi from Sindh and transferred it to the Federation.  Protests began. Later, on November 22, 1954, the provinces were divided into one unit. In 1960, Islamabad was founded.  When the One Unit was abolished on July 1, 1970, the provinces were restored and Karachi returned to Sindh 22 years later.
